COP25 climate change talks open in Madrid

Ahead of the meeting, UN Secretary General António Guterres said, "In the crucial 12 months ahead, it is essential that we secure more ambitious national commitments - particularly from the main emitters - to immediately start reducing greenhouse gas emissions at a pace consistent to reaching carbon neutrality by 2050."

He continued "We simply have to stop digging and drilling and take advantage of the vast possibilities offered by renewable energy and nature-based solutions."

The COP25 talks in reality are the starting point for 12 months of negotiations, which will lead up to COP26, which is being held in Glasgow in November 2020. This will be the meeting at which the world's response to the climate emergency will be set down and agreed to on a global scale.
